Back in the middle ages, Roquecor was known by a different name ‘Rupe Cornu’ (Horned Rock). It derived its name from the big rock that jutted out over the caves and the valley below.
The caves are only a few minutes walk down the hill opposite Café du Centre, and you can see the strewn remains of the horned rock, now known locally as ‘Roc de Nobis’.
As the legend goes, the horn of the rock suddenly broke off and crushed to death a wedding party taking place below, burying the newly weds and many of their guests. Hence the name ‘Roc de Nobis’ (Rock of the newly weds).
